Dwarven Mining Kingdom of Mhalduun [46 x 44]
This map is of the Mining Kingdom of Mhalduun.
The entrance to the Kingdom, through a mighty gate hewn from the mountain in which it resides, lay on the eastern side of the map, eventually reaching the gates of Mhalduun. The Kingdom is located near a large underground lake that feeds and underground river traveling down through the mountain, before emptying out into a small dwarven trade outpost on the surface.
The river separates the kingdom into the east side (largely the dwarven city/community) and the west side (largely the mining operation).

The map contains the following rooms:
Guest Quarters – Located just outside the gates of the Kingdom, a small guest quarters is available for visitors of the Thane, merchants, dignitaries, diplomats and the like. The guest quarters are small, but designed with human height and kept available and clean, as much as possible.
Outer Trade Chamber – Located just outside the gates of the Kingdom, a chamber designed to conduct trade with the outside world sits with a few dwarven merchants and a small contingent of dwarven guards. They keep record of all visitors, all inventory and make trade with those eager to barter for fine dwarven-made weapons, raw metals and precious gems. A small storeroom lay just west of this room.
Grand Entry Hall of Mhalduun – Once through a small antechamber with dwarven statues, a large circular room with vaulted ceilings and thick pillars opens to the splendor of the Kingdom. Doors lead west and south, further into the structure, while benches and artwork line the walls. Many visitors get no further than this chamber, meeting and speaking with them here before being asked to return outside.
Barracks & Armory – Down the hall from the Grand Entry, two adjoining barracks sleep about 40 dwarves (sharing beds as they rotate shifts) and contains storage and a small armory for their needs.
Grand Feasting Hall – A large chamber on the main level serves as the main gathering/feasting hall for the community, and is also where many of them congregate for important events, festivals or any other major celebrations.
Throne Room – The throne room of the ruler of Mhalduun is an impressive chamber with vaulted ceilings, marble floors and strong pillars. This is where most court business is conducted and where most citizens from the lower level come to speak with their ruler.
Royal Chamber – Located off the throne room are the private chambers of the Ruler, where he/she meets with trusted advisors, and a personal living quarters beyond.
Smelting Chamber – Moving down from the main level, a large cavern opens to reveal an underground river, fed by a lake, which travels north to south and bisects the main living areas and the mining operation. Just southwest of the Grand Entry lay the smelting chamber, powered by a waterwheel, where ore is brought from the mines to be smelted into bars, then transported for packaging and shipment.
Packaging (East) – On the east side of the river, a large section of cavern houses crates, barrels and other shipments ready to be checked and loaded onto the crane (across the cavern) for delivery to the rafts below.
Packaging (West) – Opposite the packaging area to the east lay another large cavern, where a wooden crane raises and lowers a pallet to waiting rafts that will transport goods down the river toward an outpost on the surface near the base of the mountain, where the river emerges.
Mining Crew Quarters [3] – Three mining crew quarters can be found in the western mines, where dwarves tend to rotate beds as they work the mines.
Underground Lake – On the north side of the large underground cavern lay an enormous underground lake (fed by rainwater, melting snow, etc…), which feeds the river running south out of the mountain. The lake is known to have a large number of fish that are one of the main food sources for the dwarves.
Mine Shafts – The western map is a maze of mine shafts and track, as the dwarves dig through the mountain in search of precious metals and gems. A handful of ladders and [2] lifts lead down to lower levels of the mine.
Suspended Jail – Two hanging cages are suspended above a large shaft the dwarves claim goes to the Abyss and keep prisoners here. A mechanism causes the bottom of the cages to open if they tilt too far in any one direction.
Crystal Cavern – One of the first sections of the mine, and a main draw for the dwarves to this location, was the presence of a rare white crystal that can be used in a variety of magical and alchemical solutions.
How do I use this map?
| Players might need to treat with the dwarves for a particular resource, or access through the mines to other locations, and have to agree to perform a task in order to reward them.
| Players might be from this community and have it serve as a home to them.
