Welcome to Jade Village, a sleepy fishing village nestled at the base of a waterfall deep in the bamboo forest.
This village map features a variety of points of interest, including a majestic waterfall, flowing river, straw huts, rice paddies, bamboo forests and a few interior locations that the PC's can explore on their travels. This village can be used as it appears, a simple fishing village, or as I intend for it to be used -- as the front of the Shadow Dragon Ninja clan, whom operate both the village and the training facility located behind the waterfall.
The Jade Village has several structures that can represent whatever type of building you want, whether it be a store, housing, storage or other purpose, but I have defined several interiors for you to use. I've included an illustrated scene by Ha Art, to help set the scene.
Here were my thoughts around those buildings:
Teahouse
Located on the south side of the village, this Teahouse serves as a community gathering location and potential stop by the rare traveler coming to the village. Due to its remote location, travelers are met with a fair amount of suspicion and distrust, especially since it is a front for a nefarious Shadow Dragon Ninja Clan.
Rice Worker's House
Located close to the river on the north side of the village, this large building features a common sleeping area, working floor and private room. It could be a legitimate operation, or part of the front that PC's could use to discover something off related to the villagers, perhaps in the log books of the person in charge, or in the personal possessions of the workers.
Shrine
A large building holds a jade statue and several mats upon the floor with pillows meant for kneeling and prayer. Several beds and the private quarters of a local priest can be used to hold private meetings or hold clues to the reality of the village occupants.
Dojo
Another large building contains a training mat and statue similar to the Shrine, as well as two sleeping areas, where a handful of villagers train and take the responsibility to protect the village from danger. Little does the party know, the entire village is the danger. 😉
Storeroom
This seemingly normal storeroom has a crate in the back-right corner that leads to a trapdoor in the floor, which will access a tunnel in the next map leading to the training facility and Shadow Dragon's lair. It's not an obvious piece, so you can use the village simply as a fishing village or paired with the future map.
You can use this village for a variety of scenarios:
Character Background Location - perhaps one of your characters is from this village or has family here, allowing you a reason to travel here and play out some part of their backstory.
Village in Need - perhaps a member of this village traveled elsewhere to beg the help of the party in a similar narrative to movies like Seven Samurai, pleading for help against something threatening the village.
Resource Location - the PC's may be in need of knowledge, an artifact or a service that can be rendered only through one of the NPC's or objects known to be held in this village, but first they must provide a service to the village people.
Shadow Ninjas - the next Map Pack will be the secret training facility and lair of the Shadow Dragon and its Ninja Clan, so the village is also planned to be a front and could contain some mixture of regular villagers and ninja, or simply be 100% ninja with danger in every shadow.
I hope you like it!
